Horizontalism: Models of Community Organizing

In a framework of modernism/coloniality, leadership of local organizations is often individualistic, Eurocentric, patriarchal, hierarchical, and authoritarian, so that a single “leader” is assumed to direct action. Professionals involved expect to be deferred to as experts. This form of top-down governance, unfortunately, has opened many possibilities for corruption, greed, backroom deals, and repressive dictatorships. Alternative models both traditional and innovative, have formed more collective and participatory forms of shared and rotating leadership now being called horizontalism. Many current social movements are working with this type of governance.
